Yes, you read the title right. I am (secretly) a (inexperienced) poet.

Originally, I had planned to publish a short story this week. But, alas, I had not the time to finish it, never mind the fact that the one I do have finished comes off relatively… controversial 😛 (it’s a long story).

Instead, I’m going to share some of the poetry I’ve written in the past nine months (though most of these I wrote over the summer). I was frantically digging through notebooks and documents to find some, then cutting and pasting and editing since I usually wrote them on a whim.

BUT I’ve chosen some of the ones that I read over and over again because I like how they sound XD

[btw: some of these are true thoughts/feelings, some of them are fabricated feelings/stories, and others are made up for characters. 😉 ]

i feel like i missed something

i’m not sure what it is

but something’s

maybe a memory or two

that should have been there

a year

that was skipped

a break

in the line

from there

to here

something should have been in

sometimes i wonder

if i had made a different choice

would that missing piece still be there?

or would it be whole?

or maybe it’s a missing piece

so He can fill

the hole

dear time

would you please tell me

how you work?

because sometimes

you come in a rage

a storm

a flashflood

that wipes out

memories and happiness and hope

or sometimes

sadness and despair and hate

sometimes you stop

and let us stand still

in a world swirling full of beauty

or raging full darkness

sometimes i can see you

racing alongside me

urging me faster, faster, faster

until i can’t see where i came from

and barely where i am going

but most times

you are a thief

the most skilled and feared

thief of all

slowly, unnoticed, you slip into

the house

the heart

the life

and you take things

innocence. peace. security. memories.

and all of the sudden

we realize those things are gone

and you took them

but it’s too late

to get them back

here i am again

not sure how many times

this has happened

feels like a million

walking away

from something you don’t want to walk

away from

but know

h a v e

just part of me wonders

what it would be like

if we didn’t have to walk

away from the things

we love

would we be

and yet maybe

we must walk away

because this thing we long for

isn’t the right

i’ll probably find myself

here again

many more times

but right now

i’m here again

and don’t want

to leave

i’m not afraid

of the dark

i’m just scared of

forgetting the light

what beams of brightness

look like

i’m not afraid

of climbing another mountain

i’m just scared of

climbing the same mountain

should be easy

but no

because I can do a lot of things

but not always

is a hard hour

but it ends

i’m not afraid of

i’m just scared of

2am after 2am

what if there was no

what if the night was made of

what if

instead of seeing the

as a giant cage

that traps us in this miserable

of tears and pain

what if

we saw it as a

great big stage

where starlight dances

and the moon

a window

that lets in light

to this barren land

and gives it color

(I kinda…lost the date? Seriously unintended)

and I woke up

all night every night

who am I?

because no one had ever told me

they had just shown me that I was

a pawn

valuable then useless

cherished then thrown aside

and now they said

they cared

but their actions

said the opposite

but in the end

my greatest fault

was the

how I was able to convince

to believe anything

and it wasn’t the lies I told

that were dangerous

but the ones

I whispered to myself

every morning

when I woke up

*peeks out from behind hands* We all have to start somewhere, right? I’ve found poetry to be a great way to channel my creativity, especially when it’s 10pm and I’m in the mood to write a whole novel. This is the next best thing xD

And you might be wondering about the title—Sparks of Emerald and Flashes of Light. The story behind it is that I used to have a private blog where I wrote poetry like this. (I was legit the only one who could access it). Then I decided I didn’t want all my poems stored on the Internet, so I transferred them off and shut it down. But the title in general refers to a sunset that ends in a green flash, something that always gives me a certain feeling only poetry can describe.

I hope you enjoyed!

What was your favorite poem? Have you ever written poetry? What do you do when you feel like you want to write an entire novel in an hour?

Awesome poems!! I loved Dear Time and Perspective! I’ve tried writing poems before, but I can’t seem to figure out how. I just end up with melodramatic words on paper xD I need to research more how to actually write poetry. I’d love to learn. Good job with yours!

Idk but I think that’s what poetry is xD The last poem was originally in prose but I broke it up to make it into poetry. I’ve tried poems that actually rhyme but these are easier 😛

      Thank you, Riley! < 3

I’m late to reading this but OH MY GOODNESS THESE ARE ALL SO PRETTY. *flails with feelings* “I’m Not Afraid//I’m Scared” was probably my favorite, but I LOVED THEM ALL SO MUCH. asdjfhlasdkjf. I actually am kind of closet poet. I’ve thought about sharing some on my blog, but I haven’t yet 😛 Come November though … I have a few plans 🙂

EEEPPP THANK YOU SO MUCH <33 This was my first time sharing poetry with anyone so I was pretty scared xD

YES YOU SHOULD TOTALLY SHARE SOME. Not to pressure you, but I think it would be pretty cool 😉
